Medical Insurance

Medical Insurance is the program, which is designed for visitors and new immigrants for the first three months in Canada. This program covers all the needs for treatment of the person who has no free government cover (OHIP - Ontario Health Insurance Program).

It is essential to choose the right sum of cover, which may vary from 5 to 100 thousand dollars.

Why is it so important? For example, your insurance coverage is $50,000, which means that the insurance company pays all your medical expenses up to $50,000, provided that the expenses were not related to a pre-existing medical condition. The insurance covers visits to a family doctor, drugs, medical tests, ambulance, hospitalization, and surgeries. Visits to a dentist due to an acute pain are covered (up to $300) by only one company, 21-st Century Travel Insurance Limited, which has been providing such coverage starting November 21, 2002. Currently there is no coverage for expenses related to pregnancy and childbirth.

If the person does not need to be hospitalized even the minimal cover of 5 thousand is enough. A visit to family doctor may cost between 40 and 70 dollars. Medicine is less than a hundred dollars. All tests and diagnostic check-ups also are not too expensive. But if there is need for hospitalization, the expenses grow considerably. For example, the cost for one day in hospital for landed immigrant is around $1,200, for visitors - $2,000. Cost for operations, which involve opening the abdominal start with $17,000. Calling for the ambulance and waiting in line in hospital may cost $400 - $500.

That is why it is vitally important to seriously consider the sum of Insurance cover. The choice depends on financial situation in the family and on the character of the person.

To buy insurance policy, people 86 years old and over should fill in medical declaration.

The table shows the price for Insurance per person per day in Canadian dollars. There is no discount for length of insurance. To calculate the daily cost of insurance for a family of 5 (2 adults + 3 children), we should multiply the daily cost of insurance for the older parent by two.

For clients in the age group 70-85, 21st Century offers a policy that includes coverage for pre-existing chronic conditions, but such a policy is more expensive (see the table below) and requires a medial declaration.

The prices you see above are fixed, it means that it does not matter where you buy the Insurance, at the Company or from the broker.

Let us see how this Insurance works. If a person falls ill and needs to see a doctor, all the expenses including his visit to the doctor, tests, medicine the person has to pay by himself. After recovering, the person has to sign the Claim Form at the doctor's, attach all the receipts, proving his financial expenses and send all the papers to the Company. The Company will reimburse all the expenses minus 50 dollars (deductible) - this is our participation. You must also remember to call the Company within 24 hours after you fall ill or visit the doctor. If a person finds himself in hospital, it is the responsibility of the hospital to call the Company and decide all the questions directly with them.

In 21-st Century the Injury Insurance starts working as soon as the Insurance is bought and Sickness Insurance starts in 72 hours. $50 deductible is charged for every illness, not for every visit. The conditions for older people, as well as prices, in 21-st Century are much better than in many other companies. Insurance Company 21-st Century sells contracts even to people with chronic diseases, if during the last 180 days their health was considered as stabilized. You may ask: "Should we buy the Insurance before our family arrives in Canada or after that?" For older people and for small children it is better to buy it beforehand, so that they can have medical cover immediately upon arrival, but not after 48 or 72 hours. These hours may be the most important. You never know, how old people will endure the flight across the ocean?

If a person decides to buy Medical Insurance a month after his arrival to Canada, the Insurance starts working in 7 days.

There is another question: "Should we buy Insurance for the whole period, or buy it each month?"

If we buy insurance every month, we are covered continuously, but each time we get new programs and answer the same medical questions and follow the same requirements. The main requirement is Preexisting Condition - to be in stable health during the last 180 days. When we get a new Insurance for the next month, we may answer positively the question of being sick for the last 180 days; as the result of it we may be refused an Insurance or the new Insurance will exclude the cover of this disease.
